Just 7 days after I had asked my doctor, I had my CT scan appointment at Poole Hospital. I couldn’t believe how quickly I was seen! It was strange going to the hospital and going to a completely different wing. For the last month I had been going to oncology twice a week for Bloods and Covid tests, and then every Friday to the Cancer Day Unit, but today, I was going somewhere completely different!
Again, everyone in the blue unit were the friendliest people! I don’t know the nurse’s name, but he took me into a room and inserted a cannula into my hand. I had to have a cannula as I was having a contrast CT scan which means they inject a dye into the veins to produce a clearer image. Once inserted, I was taken into the room with the CT scan machine was and was told to lie down. They inserted the machine with dye into it, into the cannula, and left the room. The machine started spinning around the bench I was lying on, but at the same time, it was moving up and down taking scans of different parts of the body. At certain points, the machine asks you to hold your breath while it takes images. Luckily it doesn’t make you do it for too long!
After a few minutes, the nurses spoke over the speaker system and explained that they were going to release the dye and that I may have a sensation that I am wetting myself. They were not lying! After a few seconds, it felt like between my legs was getting warmer and warmer, but it went away quickly. It wasn’t the most pleasant of experiences!
After 10 minutes, the scans were over, but I was told I had to wait in the waiting room for 10 minutes to ensure I didn’t have any reactions to the dye, etc, and then I had the cannula removed and went home. It was a much simpler process than I had originally thought, but glad that I had now had it done, so I can find out if cancer had spread to anywhere else in my body.
Fingers Crossed!! 😊
