This was an informative event that is arranged by the hospital, for you and others about to start chemotherapy, to go to a talk about chemo. Mine was based at a community centre near Poole Hospital and was run by one of the chemotherapy nurses. She sat at the front of the hall with a PowerPoint presentation, and just went through what to expect at chemotherapy, common side effects, and not-so-common side effects. It was useful to understand certain elements such as – being sick while on chemo, is NOT normal anymore. You may have seen old films where people have their heads constantly down the toilet because of the effects of chemo, but this simply is not the case anymore! I was able to take Laura to this session also, and I think it helped her understand what I could be like when going through treatment, so it opened her eyes to understand that maybe I will not be as sick as we once thought. I think this was a relief to her. So, if you are ever offered to go to one of these sessions, I would 100% recommend it, and also take with your primary carer or whoever is going to be looking after you.
